Collection (in art):
A collection is a curated group of artworks that are intentionally connected through a shared theme, subject, style, or concept. Unlike a single piece, which is complete on its own, a collection invites the viewer to experience multiple works together, creating a layered or extended meaning. Collections can take many forms: a series of paintings exploring the same subject in different conditions (such as Monet’s Haystacks), narrative cycles that tell a story across panels or canvases (like Giotto’s frescoes), or conceptual sets where each piece contributes to a broader idea. By bringing works into dialogue with each other, collections highlight artistic development, variation, and context, allowing for deeper engagement than any single artwork alone.
