singles

Single (in art):
A single is an independent artwork created to stand on its own, complete in both form and meaning without reliance on additional pieces. Unlike collections, which unfold across multiple works, a single is designed to capture an idea, subject, or expression within one unified composition. It often embodies the artist’s vision in a concentrated way, encouraging the viewer to focus fully on that single moment, figure, or object. Many iconic masterpieces, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Grant Wood’s American Gothic, are singles—individual works that achieve lasting impact without belonging to a broader series. Singles highlight the power of one image to resonate deeply, inviting contemplation of its details, symbolism, and emotional force in isolation.
